Scott Verplank, PGA golfer was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 9 years old. For the past 11 months, he's worn an insulin pump, made by MiniMed on and off the golf course. The beeper-size pump serves as an electric pancreas. LPGA tour players Kelli Kuehne, Michelle McGann and Sherri Turner all use insulin pumps.
Verplank finds it easier to stabilize his blood sugar with the constant flow of insulin from the pump to his 5-9, 165lb body. When he used injections instead of the pump, he experienced insulin fluctuations. "When I go to the course, my priorities are different," he says. "I'm much more concerned with my diabetes than how I'm going to play." The pump looks like a beeper hooked to the back of Verplank's pants when he plays a tournament. He could hide it under his shirt, but he believes letting it show sends a positive message, especially to kids. "I've probably met 15 kids getting autographs this year who were wearing the pump. I try to encourage them." Published in USA TODAY
