Blood Sugars & Sports

Interpreting blood sugars is not easy

A reading of 12 which is stable requires the usual amount of insulin to bring it down. However, a reading of 12 which is falling requires much less insulin to bring it down. And a reading of 12 which is going up, requires substantially more insulin to stop it going up any further. We have found this information critical in determining the correct amount of insulin to give Thomas before he competes in sports. We have found if his morning blood sugar is over 10, the adrenaline rush pre-game, renders his Humalog almost useless. And to complicate matters, a high blood sugar in the morning is harder to correct than the same level in the evening, due to other morning hormones which keep it up. This is where Humalog helps. We review his blood sugars every 15 minutes 11/2 hours prior to a game and add Humalog as necessary. Carol Hagan, (Thomas 11 yr. dx 6)
